How to Choose a Tub-to-Shower Conversion Company: 8 Questions to Ask

Search for tub-to-shower conversion companies near Louisville and you’ll get national brands, local remodelers, plumbers and handymen, all promising a new shower in no time. The work looks similar in the photos. The difference shows up behind the walls and a year later.

These are the eight questions we’d ask any company, including us, before you sign.

1. Who Will Actually Do the Work?

Ask whether the installers are the company’s own employees or subcontractors hired for the day. The person who quotes your job should work for the same company as the crew who installs it, and that company should be the one you call if something isn’t right.

At Windows Plus, our own in-house crews do every conversion.

2. What Happens When the Old Tub Comes Out?

This is the question that separates a quick cover-up from a real conversion. Once the tub and surround are removed, the framing and subfloor are exposed. If there’s rot or water damage, it has to be fixed before the new shower goes in. Ask how they handle what they find and how it affects the price.

3. Is the Base Made to Fit My Space?

A tub alcove is rarely a perfect stock size. A base and wall system made to fit your space seals better and looks finished. Ask whether the base fits the footprint your tub left or whether filler pieces will make up the difference.

4. What Are the Walls Made Of?

Tile looks great but brings grout lines to scrub and reseal. Solid, grout-free wall panels wipe clean and don’t give mold a place to start. Ask what the walls are, how the seams are sealed, and how to clean them. For a deeper comparison, see our guide to shower wall materials.

5. What Safety Options Are Available?

Many conversions happen because the tub wall is getting harder to step over. Ask about a low-threshold or barrier-free base, grab bars, a built-in or fold-down seat, a slip-resistant floor and a handheld shower head. Even if you don’t need them today, it’s easier to add them now than later.

6. How Long Will My Bathroom Be Out of Use?

Most of our conversions take one to two days from tear-out to cleanup. Ask for a clear timeline, what day the water will be off, and who to call if anything changes.

7. Is the Price in Writing, and What Does It Include?

Ask for a written price that covers removal, the base, walls, door, fixtures, any safety options, installation, cleanup and hauling away the old tub. Ask what could change the price once the old tub is out. If you’re still budgeting, read our tub-to-shower conversion cost guide.

8. Can I See Local Work and Reviews?

Ask for photos of conversions in homes near you and read recent Google reviews that mention the crew by name and how they left the house. Windows Plus has a 4.8 from 600+ Google reviews, and you can see a real Crestwood project in our Montfort Lane conversion story.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • A price given over the phone without anyone seeing the bathroom
  • No answer on who the installers are
  • A plan to cover the old tub instead of removing it
  • Pressure to sign the same day to keep a price
  • No written list of what’s included

Is a Conversion the Right Move?

If nobody in the house takes baths, a conversion usually makes the bathroom safer and easier to clean. If it’s the only tub in the house or you have young kids, a tub and shower combo may be the better fit. We’ll talk through both at your estimate.
