Bathtub Replacement: Signs It’s Time, Your Options and What Install Day Looks Like

A bathtub can look fine from the doorway and still be the reason your bathroom feels tired. Chips in the finish, a stain that never scrubs out, a soft spot near the drain, or caulk you reseal every few months are all signs the tub has done its job.

This guide covers the signs it’s time for a bathtub replacement, the options you have, and what install day actually looks like when our crews do the work in Louisville homes.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bathtub

  • Cracks or chips in the tub surface, especially near the drain or where people step in
  • Stains and dull spots that come back no matter what you clean with
  • Flex or soft spots when you stand in the tub, which can mean the support underneath is failing
  • Moldy grout or failing caulk around the tub walls
  • Water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom or on the wall next to the tub
  • A tub that is hard to step into for someone in the house

Cracks, flex and water stains are the ones not to wait on. They usually mean water is already getting where it shouldn’t, and the longer it goes, the more there is to fix behind the walls.

Refinish, Liner or Replace?

Homeowners usually weigh three paths.

Refinishing

A new coating is sprayed over the old tub. It changes the color and covers wear, but the tub underneath is the same age, cracks and flex are still there, and the coating can peel with heavy use.

A liner over the old tub

A shell is fitted over the existing tub. It’s faster than a full replacement, but nobody looks at what is happening under the old tub or behind the old walls.

Full bathtub replacement

The old tub and surround come out, the space is checked, and a new tub and new walls go in. This is what we do. It’s the only option that lets you see and fix water damage before the new tub covers it up.

Your Bathtub Replacement Options

When we replace a tub, we replace the tub and the walls around it together so everything matches and seals as one system. The choices that matter most:

  • The tub itself. Made to fit your existing alcove, so it fills the space your old tub left instead of a stock size squeezed into place.
  • Grout-free walls. Solid wall panels in looks like subway tile or marble, with no grout lines to scrub or reseal.
  • A glass door. A clear glass door keeps water in and shows off the new walls.
  • Built-in shelves. Room for shampoo and soap without a caddy hanging off the shower head.
  • Grab bars. Placed where you actually step in and out, for steadier bath time at any age.
  • New fixtures. A new shower head, faucet and trim to match.

If the tub gets used for baths, kids or pets, a tub and shower combo keeps both. If nobody takes baths anymore, a tub-to-shower conversion may fit your house better.

What Install Day Looks Like

Most of our bathtub replacements take one to two days. Here’s how it goes when our own crew is in your home.

Day one: protect, remove, inspect

The crew covers floors and the path to the bathroom, then removes the fixtures, the old walls and the old tub. Once the tub is out, they look at the framing and subfloor. This is where hidden water damage shows up, and it gets dealt with before anything new goes in.

Install the new tub and walls

The new tub is set level and supported so it won’t flex, then the wall system goes up around it and every seam is sealed. Shelves, grab bars and the door go in after the walls.

Finish and walk through

The crew installs the new fixtures, cleans up and hauls the old tub away. Then they run the water with you, check every seal, and show you how to care for the new tub and walls.

What Drives the Price

Every bathroom is different, so we don’t quote over the phone. The things that move the number most are the size of the space, the tub and wall options you choose, extras like a door, shelves and grab bars, and what we find when the old tub comes out. Bathtub Replacement Questions

How long does a bathtub replacement take?

Most take one to two days, including tear-out and cleanup.

Do you replace just the tub or the walls too?

We replace the tub and the walls around it together. New walls over a new tub seal as one system, and it lets us check what’s behind the old surround.

Do you remodel the rest of the bathroom?

No. We focus on the wet space: the tub or shower, the walls, the door and the fixtures. Your vanity, flooring and the rest of the room stay put.

Who does the work?

Our own in-house crews, never subcontractors.
