Exterior Door Installation Near Me: A Louisville Homeowner’s Guide

By Todd, owner of Windows Plus

When you search “exterior door installation near me,” you’ll get a mix of big-box installers, handymen and local companies. The door itself matters, but who installs it and how matters more. A good door hung badly will stick, drag and leak. Here’s what Louisville homeowners should know about exterior doors, from picking the material to what happens on install day.

Why “near me” actually matters

A local installer knows Louisville’s weather, the humidity that swells old doors, the freeze-thaw that cracks sills and the storms that drive rain at your threshold. More practically, when you need someone to come back and adjust something, a local company with its own crews is a phone call away, not a ticket in a national queue.

Signs it’s time to replace an exterior door

  • Daylight or drafts around the edges when it’s closed
  • Sticking, dragging or a door that won’t latch without a shove
  • Rot or soft spots at the bottom of the door, the frame or the sill
  • Rust, dents or peeling paint on a steel door
  • Fogged or cracked glass in the door or sidelites
  • A lock or deadbolt that doesn’t line up anymore

Fiberglass vs. steel vs. wood

  • Fiberglass: My recommendation for most front doors. It won’t rot, dent or rust, it insulates well and it can look like painted or stained wood. It handles Louisville’s humidity without swelling.
  • Steel: Strong, secure and usually the most affordable. It can dent, and scratches need touch-up to prevent rust. A great choice for side and garage entries.
  • Wood: Beautiful and classic, but it needs regular refinishing and can warp or rot without care.

Types of exterior doors we install

  • Entry doors: Front and side doors, with or without sidelites and transoms.
  • Sliding glass patio doors: Space-saving and low-maintenance. See our sliding glass doors.
  • French patio doors: Hinged doors with a traditional look.
  • Storm doors: An added layer of protection and ventilation in front of an entry door.

We have a real example of a patio door swap in our Maple Crest Court project.

What to expect during installation

  1. Measure and order. We measure the opening at your estimate so the new door is made to fit.
  2. Remove the old door. We take out the old door, frame and sill.
  3. Check the opening. Rotted sills and framing get fixed before the new door goes in.
  4. Set and seal. We set the new unit plumb and square, anchor it into the framing, insulate the gaps and seal it against water.
  5. Trim and adjust. We finish the trim, install the hardware and adjust the door so it swings, closes and locks smoothly.

Most exterior doors are done in a day.

The payoff

  • Comfort: No more drafts in the entry.
  • Security: A solid door, properly anchored with a good deadbolt, is much harder to force.
  • Curb appeal: The front door is the focal point of your house. A new one changes the whole look.

What affects the cost

Material, size, glass, sidelites or transoms, hardware and the condition of the opening all move the price. We don’t post a single number because two doors can be very different jobs. We’ll give you a written price after we look at yours.

Where we work

We install exterior doors throughout Louisville and the surrounding area, and in Lexington and Central Kentucky too. See our guide to entry door replacement in Lexington.

Exterior door FAQ

How long does exterior door installation take?

Most doors are done in a day.

Do you repair doors?

No. We replace them. When a door has rotted, sagged or stopped sealing, replacing the whole unit is the lasting fix.

Can I add a storm door to a new entry door?

Yes. We can install both at the same time.

What’s the most energy-efficient exterior door?

An insulated fiberglass or steel door with a good weatherstripping system and insulated glass, installed and sealed properly.

Choosing glass for an exterior door

  • Clear glass: The most light, the least privacy.
  • Privacy or textured glass: Lets light in while blurring the view from outside.
  • Decorative glass: Patterns and caming add style to the entry.
  • Blinds between the glass: Common on patio doors, with nothing to dust or tangle.
  • Solid door with sidelites: Keeps the door itself solid for security while the sidelites brighten the entry.

All the glass should be insulated and tempered, both for efficiency and safety.

Hardware and locks

Hardware is what you touch every day, so it’s worth choosing carefully. Consider:

  • A solid deadbolt that throws fully into a reinforced strike plate
  • Multi-point locks on patio doors and some entry doors, which lock at the top, middle and bottom
  • Finish: Satin nickel, black, bronze and brass are all common. Pick one that matches your other exterior fixtures.
  • Smart locks: Keypads and app-controlled locks are popular with families and anyone who rents out a space.

Picking a color

A new front door is one of the easiest ways to change the look of a house. A few tips:

  • Pick a color that works with your brick, siding and roof, not just one you love on its own.
  • Darker colors look sharp but get hotter in direct afternoon sun. Fiberglass handles that better than steel.
  • If you’re not sure, park across the street and look at the house. The door should look like it belongs.

How to care for a new exterior door

  • Wipe down the door and glass a few times a year
  • Keep the sill and patio door tracks free of dirt and leaves
  • Check the weatherstripping every fall for tears or gaps
  • Don’t slam it. A well-installed door closes and latches with a light push.

Exterior door FAQ, continued

Can you replace just the door and keep the frame?

We replace the whole unit, with the door, frame and sill together. That’s how you get a door that seals, swings and locks the way it should.

Will a new door fit my existing opening?

Doors are made to fit your opening. We measure at the estimate and order accordingly.
